Depo-Provera and Provera medication
A recent study suggests that the long-term use of injectable Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (contraceptive injections Depot Provera and Sayana Press) may be associated with an increased risk of developing meningiomas. This rare side effect was not previously known.
What is a meningioma?
A meningioma is a tumour that develops from the meninges, the protective layers surrounding your brain and spinal cord. Most meningiomas are benign (non- cancerous). If a meningioma is present, they often have no symptoms and do not need treatment. However sometimes the size and location of a meningioma puts pressure on brain structures which can cause mild or more serious symptoms, and in these situations surgical treatment may be required.
This risk of developing meningiomas appears to increase the longer that Depot Provera or Sayana Press is used.
Symptoms of meningioma can include:
- Headaches
- Vision problems
- Seizures
- Changes in behaviour or personality
- Hearing loss
- Weakness in arms or legs
If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact the surgery to arrange an urgent GP appointment.
Because this side effect is very rare, you do not need to stop using Depo-Provera or Sayana Press, you just need to be aware of this risk. However if you would like to discuss this further, or if you wish to explore switching to a different type of contraceptive, please book an appointment to discuss this.
